Buffoonery on American Idol

I'm embarrassed.

Leroy Wells, Li'l Jon's broke, tired brother, made a horrific appearance on American Idol tonight. Leroy believed he was the new king of crunk and decided to showcase his... umm... errr... talents, and embarrass every Black person in every country that gets American Idol.

Honestly, the only thing I understood was, "can you dig it!" [INSERT SKIN TEETH]. While Simon, the only voice of reason on that show sometimes thought Leroy was a fool (a correct assumption), both Randy and Paula thought Leroy was the greatest thing.

"Your energy is great!" gushed Paula -- we all know she's pretty much useless.

Sigh. The man is a buffoon -- a buffoon that needs subtitles.

If that wasn't a modern minstrel show, I don't know what the heck is.

Girl, you must be kidding. Leroy was a crackhead -- a crackhead who enjoyed himself ("Just put me on the TV!")-- but a crackhead nonetheless. And, like Shinehead said, "Don't gimme none, me no want none, don't gimme no crack! Crack!"

You want a moderm day minstrel show?

Turn on MTV.

Better yet, take a look at the record industry. This guy is just doing what everybody else is trying to do in America; get on tv any which way he can. And personally, I give him credit for utilzing a great skill that white America has been using for years: paying attention to marketing trends.

He danced to HIS own tune. He had America eating from his hand.

That's far from embarrasing.

^If you think so.

If you use that logic, then the folks on MTV aren't a part of any minstrel show -- they have millions of people eating out of their hands. So they should be commended as well.

I'm sorry, brother was wack, from top to bottom.

I just saw the performance. it was hilarious. I didnt know whether to laugh or to cry. I mean I could understand two words he said. He was like odb meets crunk. disturbing.

I think he was just acting a fool to get on tv but yea it was pretty sad from a certain viewpoint.

Why do people keep saying he's on drugs? A lot of my friends act like that, and they sure aren't on drugs. That's just their personality. If it was a white guy acting crazy, no one would even mention drugs, but when it's a black guy, everyone says he's on crack. On what bases do you assume this??? Have you ever been out of the suburbs before? If not, GET OUT!! It's called being charasmatic and funny, not being on drugs.

I don't have an account for this site! I came across it (and many others) when I searched for Leroy on Yahoo. If you MUST know, my name is Carrie Anne Douglas. DAMN!

My bad, I'm Carrie Douglas, 'on the real'. (who even says that anymore?)

Well, Carrie, if he was white, I probably would say the same thing. But, let me be real, what a white person says on AI doesn't affect me. I don't care what Sum 41 does or how Uncle Cracker carries on. But I will blog the hell out of what Janet Jackson or Nelly says or does.

Girl, have you seen Bamboozled? If you won't read a book, watch a movie.

And about me being from the suburbs, I always laugh at people who think that you must be some chick chilling out in suburbia, saying, 'like, oh-my-god!' and drinking lattés (I can't lie, I do like a latté), while rolling up to the mall.

I'm the juxtaposition of urban and suburb -- and I won't apologize for it. Heck, it makes me more interesting.

Whether I'm from the hood or not is totally irrelevant to this discussion -- heck, for all we know, Leroy could be from the poshest neighbourhood in Louisiana, don't fool yourself. But he still acted like an ass, an ass on crack.

personality? ok yea some folks do have that type of personality but I would still wonder if they are high or something acting that way.

If you saw someon acting that way would you declare them perfectly normal? naa, they acting crazy. maybe its their personality but its still crazy.

He was in jail for failing to appear after allegedly shooting someone in the hip...

Honestly, I don't know how to even take that. I had no clue that Leroy had been in jail. I think that may be detrimental to your argument.

Look, my blog wasn't judging Leroy's character. I was commenting on his actions. He could be the greatest guy in the world (although after possibly shooting someone, I don't know if he's the greatest), but I think his actions on AI were crazy. He looked crazy, plain and simple.

What we tend to forget is that TV is a medium that you don't get any background info about the person as you're watching them. You learn what you're going to know in that minute they are on camera. Do you think the majority of viewers did a Google search on Leroy to find out what kind of person he is?

No, they made their judgments when he was on their TV screens. So, Leroy could be a pastor and no one would know or care because for the minute and a half he was on TV he was acting like buffoon.
